What does it take to be "the best"?

You've spent the past several months keeping a weekly (or more!) blog...and you've spent the past several months reading, commenting on, and voting for your classmates' blogs. Looking back at past "Best of Blogs"--and thinking back on the entries you've written that you feel are "your best"--what do you feel it takes to be a "good" (or even "the best") blog entry?

Today, after you've done the usual Tuesday blog-read & "Best of Blogs" voting, I want you to spend a moment skimming back through your own & others' blogs, then post a comment here giving the THREE specific qualities that make a good blog post. In listing these three qualities, I want you to be as specific as possible: what exactly makes a post "interesting" or "funny" or "something I can relate to"?

I think a blog that can pull your attention in on the first sentence demonstrates a really good blog. There are some blogs that ramble on and on about their weekend, I like to hear those but I get annoyed when there are names like x, and y. Even when they use the person's initials. I like to read blogs that deal with everyone's daily life, like the Planet Frannie blog posts, those crack me up. It is like the author isn't trying to be funny, it just comes out like that.

The blogs that I find to be the "best" have to contain some sort of meaningful expression. This can be through humor, when someone expresses something that you can relate to and you almost laugh out loud. Blogs that catch my attention should also be well written (I admit that mine is not always this way) but if it has a consistent flow to it that makes the reader want to go on after one paragraph -- that is a good quality. I also like when people dont hold back and write about whatever they feel like. Sometimes this can be throught anger, frustration, or reflection.

I guess what just makes me pick is that mostly i like random topics and events. i love it when some one writes about something that i would have never thought of to write.

Hmm, well I think that the bottom line as far as what makes something interesting is how much I can relate to it. There are several ways for me to relate to a piece. Humor and sarcasm always pull me in. If someone has something hilarious to say about cops, coffee, or Christmas (for example) I will laugh and I will probably at least partially agree with or understand this person's point of view. A moving piece of writing is also easy to identify with. Discussing hot political and social issues that affect me directly will always draw me in. I guess it is important for a piece to be somewhat broad, to encompass a diverse group of people and make them feel that they can relate to the piece. It is easy (easier) with our blogs because we have a very small and specific audience: college students. We all share so much in common: our gripes and our pleasures. I don't really know how to be more specific than that.

1. Yes of course the first characteristic of the best blog is that it's funny. To elaborate on that...I read a blog and if I share the same sense of humor as the blogger I find their blog funny and entertaining...you see a blog can be funny without being tied to my humor, but if it is it's that much better and I like it that much more.

2. Another characteristic of the best blog is that it is out of the ordinary. Like take for example this week...everyone writes and complains about the piles of work and how nothing will ever get done. Dont' get me wrong I'm not saying this is a bad blog, but after like the first five I'm not that into it anymore. I like to read something different and out of the ordinary.

3. If a blog can show to you a persons personality I think that it's a very good blog. If you can take 5 minutes and type out a blog, I read it and can understand where you're coming from that's a good blog. If you can portray your sense of humor and your overall personality in a short piece of writing I will vote for you for blog of the week!

I like blogs that don't try too hard. When you know the author is worked up- and as long as it's over something itneresting, like ironic things that happen every day that most of us just deal with. Blogs that don't just go on and on about drunken activities with no point. I like blogs that make a statement or point out facts of happenings I never paid much attention to. I also like blogs who use correct spelling and know how to punctuate. Everyone makes mistakes, but constant ones drive me crazy. Blame it on being an English major.

The first sentence has to really pull me in. If the first sentence is boring usually the whole blog will be as well. Second, I like a blog more if there is dialogue, maybe its just me but its a lot more funny reading what people actually say. And last, I think a blog has to be on an interesting topic. Not something that I can relate to but something *everyone* can relate to. For example: If a girl talks about PMS, most likely the guys aren`t going to like it cuz they can`t relate.(eh well some can but thats their own problem) Yet, if someone talks about something like drinking, or college in general then everyone can relate (unless you dont drink, but being on this campus for 2 years, im pretty sure 90% of us do)

Ok...so i've thought about this and i've come up with what i think is the best. Yes it has to be funny and when it relates to you it's even funnier. As i went through the past blogs the one that i thought was the best was by Planet Frannie and her running trots. If you are athletic and run a lot you would understand this storying.
We all have our own opinion of what is the best. What draws me into a blog is someone who is writing about drama filled situations. I have had many of those and have seen many crazy things that you couldn't imagine happened to friends, bf's, etc. I like to read things that are easy going but have a plot. I'm not big into reading political issues even though they are important. I read plenty of books and scholarly journals to make me sick...when i read a blog i want something other then that. So keep on writing great stories and i'll keep on reading.

I think the three requirements used by this class for good blogs are: 1)drunken humor - college kids can't get enough of it 2)Deep thoughts on everyday occurrences like the one about ants 3)campy monologues like most of Planet Frannie's posts.

What does it take to be the best?
To everyone this is different and a lot depends on your own values, opinions, etc. I am a pretty conservative person, and I am not a partier, so I enjoy blogs that are relatively clean. Here are the factors that for me make a blog the best.

1. For a funny blog to be the best: if the blog is about you, the story must be believable. If it is coming from an experience someone had, I have to see it as plausible. Humor needs to be original. Made up stories can be humorous, but don’t pass them off as real.
2. For a philosophical blog: if the topic is serious, then the writing must be genuine. There has to be a personal attachment to the topic. If it is obvious that the writer feels strongly about the topic, then I view the blog as of high quality.
3. For an educational blog to be the best: if the blog is meant to instruct, then the information must be relevant. I must know why I need to learn or know the information. The writer also must know about the topic and have accurate information, or the information must at least appear to be accurate.

A good blog...hmmm...I think a good blog is original. I like reading things that actually had some thought on into them. A good blog is written smooth; everything flows. I think the writter needs to be passionate about what they are writting about...but who am I to say. I LIKE IT WHEN IT'S FUNNY :)

When im reading the blogs whatever catches my attention usually happens in the first sentence or two. I like the blog that has a picture everytime because it gives you a visual effect. I also like planet frannies because she makes fun of things in real life. Reading about the drunk stories is always fun because they are comical, and something that I can relate to.

A blog which is "interesting" or "funny" or something I can relate to"...

1. looks nice,
2. makes me feel like respond to the blogger who wrote the posting, and
3. gives me some ideas after reading it.

This is what I thought.

There are a number of things the make one blog better then the other. When i go to read a blog i like to see a funny story, that isnt too long. For example, this week i thought the best blog was Zeit und tap. This person have the perfect mix between a funny, not to serious story, that was not too long. This in my mind makes for the most interesting blog. I hate blog that are to serious and touch upon super imporant topics. If i wanted to know the news or any other information i would turn on the tv and watch CNN.

"The best" kinda blog posts that have captured me are the ones that can make me laugh aloud or make me let a little giggle. It's those comical ridiculous stories that Lady Luck happens to abandon the person at the time they need her most. It's the posts that make you smile or make you feel you're not the only one going through struggles. Like you're not the only one that is fed up with school or having a bad day.

i think that the best blogs are ones that grab your from whatever world you happen to be on that day and pull you into the authors examples of peoples weekends whenever some one gets busted or gets drunk and falls down in the street or gets dropkicked by random people i mean this is something that people can see and be like yea i've done that and i think that gives it more power i mean the only way you can really relate to something is if it's happened to you and then you can always think yea.... that was fun, embarassing, it hurt.. point being you can always laught at yourself especially when it's someone else playing your part. i think it's realism that makes a good blog
